The JPSG shall politically monitor Europol's activities in fulfilling its mission, including as regards the impact of those activities on the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons. Tasks of the JPSG were defined in Article 51 of the Regulation no 2016/794. JPSG has the right to receive the following information from Europol:
- threat assessments, strategic analyses and general situation reports relating to Europol's objective as well as the results of studies and evaluations commissioned by Europol;
- the administrative arrangements;
- the annual work programme and the multiannual programming;
- the annual activity report on Europol's activities;
- the evaluation report on Europol drawn up by the Commission.

The JPSG is presided jointly by the Parliament of the country holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.

The organisation and the rules of procedure of the group are determined together by the European Parliament and the national parliaments. The rules of procedure of the JPSG were adopted during its second meeting on 19 March 2018 in Sofia.

Polish Sejm is represented in JPSG by two Deputies.
